An Introduction to Deism, and Christian Deism

Updated: Jun 29, 2020

What makes a true Christian? It is a common question that is asked all too often. Is it what passages we perceive as correct? Is it our belief about things? Is it our church? No one can honestly answer these things. Nevertheless, the topic is present; many people question "is their belief the right belief," and if so, what makes everyone else's beliefs incorrect.

We here at The CDUC have an answer, but it is not an answer that will please most. To us makes a Christian a Christian is if they are a follower of Christ, Jesus. This definition is the most straightforward and most comfortable way to understand why so many Christian groups exist.

But what makes us different, what sets us (The CDUC) apart from most Christian groups?

The key difference is our beliefs; we here believe in Deism, not Theism. However, some people might wonder what the difference between Deism and Theism is?

Theism is the belief in the existence of a god or gods, especially belief in one God as the creator of the Universe, intervening in it and sustaining a personal relation to his creatures.

Deism is the belief in the existence of a supreme being, specifically of a creator who does not intervene in the Universe.

But wait, you might wonder how a Deist could call himself Christian? The Bible has miracles, and Deism does not posit that!

This statement is current. The Bible does have miracles. However, it is those miracles that makeup Christianity's biggest flaw.

Christianity has tens of thousands of groups, all having a belief in one particular book, The Bible. However, the reason there are so many groups is that they disagree with each other in terms of doctrine, dogma, and understanding.

However, what if there was a belief that was universal and could be understood by everyone! Thankfully there is such a belief, which is Deism. Deism, while it may sound bland to most but is the most probable of belief systems. Deism only posits that God does not intervene; it does not say what God is or how he acts. This belief is compatible with science since it does not make such a grand claim without evidence. Evidence being the Universe. God, according to Deism, is the most probable because of its grandeur. Their many types of Deism; there is Pandeism, which is the belief that God is the Universe. There is Panendeism, the belief that God is the Universe and also transcends beyond it.

Polydeism, which states multiple creators, and many more deistic beliefs. So what is Christian Deism?

Christian Deism is the belief in a Creator and the belief in God's natural laws/morals that were taught by Jesus himself. Christian Deism was a widespread belief of many prominent figures, such as George Washington, John Locke, Paul Young, Matthew Tindal, Thomas Jefferson, and others. This belief is what we the CDUC strive to teach and explain why Christian Deism is the belief of our generation.
